It achieves its key properties through heat treatment (hardening and tempering), making it a balanced and cost-effective choice for applications requiring durability and edge retention.

Hardness & Strength: It can be hardened to a high degree (typically up to 50-55 HRC), providing excellent strength and resistance to abrasion.
Wear Resistance: Its hardened martensitic structure offers very good wear resistance, which is crucial for cutting edges and mechanical parts.
Corrosion Resistance: It possesses moderate corrosion resistance, superior to carbon steels but less than austenitic steels like 304. It is suitable for mildly corrosive environments.
Machinability & Finish: It can be machined in the annealed state and polished to a very high, bright surface finish, which is aesthetically desirable.
